{"id":254,"date":"2016-12-01T13:00:10","date_gmt":"2016-12-01T12:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/airport.frozennet.de\/?page_id=254\/"},"modified":"2017-04-04T12:50:42","modified_gmt":"2017-04-04T10:50:42","slug":"airport-history","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.augsburg-airport.de\/en\/airport\/airport-history\/","title":{"rendered":"Airport history"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>The era of 1968<\/h4>\n<p>Our airport was officially opened on <b>22 June 1968<\/b> \u2013 named Flughafen Augsburg-M\u00fchlhausen (Augsburg-M\u00fchlhausen Airport).<\/p>\n<p>After many years of lively discussions Augsburg became increasingly interesting for the regional economy thanks to &#8220;Germany\u2019s largest commercial airport&#8221;.\u00a0This was first and foremost a political achievement of Wolfgang Pepper, at this time mayor of Augsburg.<\/p>\n<p>As early as <b>1928<\/b> Augsburg had had its own airport. It was situated in Haunstetten.<\/p>\n<p>In <b>1945 <\/b>the American occupying forces took charge of the airport.<\/p>\n<p>Gliders were allowed to use it from <b>1952<\/b> and<\/p>\n<p>motorized aeroplanes from <b>1964<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>In <b>1964<\/b> the Americans left the airport.<\/p>\n<p>At this time Augsburger Flughafen GmbH was founded as a successor company of Schw\u00e4bisch-Bayerische Fluggesellschaft GmbH, which had been closed in 1945.<\/p>\n<p>In <b>1970<\/b>, Dr. Kotter, the city\u2019s mayor and head of the economic department, insisted that Augsburg was extremely interested in gaining a direct access to German air traffic as this was very important for the regional economy.<\/p>\n<p>In <b>1985<\/b>, Augsburg Airport was equipped with the control area necessary for instrument flight.<\/p>\n<p>At the <b>1 November 1994<\/b> the airport fire brigade was awarded the status of a \u201cWerkfeuerwehr\u201d (company fire brigade).<\/p>\n<p>At the end of <b>November 1997<\/b> the new tower was completed. Due to its height, the old tower had been built far to near to the runway and therefore did not comply with international regulations on instrument flights.<\/p>\n<p>In <b>1998<\/b>, Augsburg Airport became internationally competitive owing to the permanent customs and police station that was established at that time.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, Augsburg Airways, which had been very active at Augsburg Airport, had to leave our airport permanently in <b>2004<\/b>. According to international regulations the runway had become far too short to guarantee economical scheduled air travel at competitive conditions with their aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>In <b>2005<\/b> Augsburg Airport was hit by an economic disaster.<\/p>\n<p>Only three months later, though, it was brought back on a new road to success by a new management and strong support of the city of Augsburg as a <b>&#8220;City Airport \u2013 an airport not just for business travellers&#8221;<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Our airport is also often used by film crews and VIPs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"dt-single-image\" href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/MichaelBullyHerbig.jpg\" data-dt-img-description=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail
